Literally meaning “Mother of Water” in Lao and Thai, the Southeast Asian Mekong River is a physical cross section of its culturally diverse slice of the globe. The Mother of Water meanders south from China through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam before its terminus in the South China Sea. The five-block blacktop river of University Avenue between Mackubin and Galtier streets in St. Paul known as Little Mekong might not quite cover the distance of the 12th-longest river in the world (it is, after all, little) but in one mile it delivers the same dynamic multi-cultural punch that it takes its namesake 2,703 miles to accomplish.
On the evenings of August 7th and 8th, St. Paul’s vibrant mini-Mekong business district takes to the streets to recreate an authentic, ambling Southeast Asian night market experience. Enjoy performers, festivities, and, of course, delicious eats and drinks.
Little Mekong Night Market: Free admission. Aug. 7 (6 p.m.-12 a.m.) and Aug. 8 (4 p.m.-12 a.m.), University Avenue and Western Avenue between Mackubin and Galtier Streets, St. Paul,littlemekong.com
